“ | Oh, this ain't a Jelly Gun, sunshine. | ” |
— Dr. Nefario to the mutated El Macho, before shooting him with the Fart Gun
|
The Fart Gun is a weapon created by Dr. Nefario.
It is a short-ranged industrial-looking metallic musket with a canister on top holding blue liquid and a showerhead-like ventilator as a blaster scope on the front. The showerhead enables it to distribute brown gas which can travel for about a meter and a half before dissipating. True to its name, when fired, it sounds like someone farting, and its gas is noxious and disgusting. Despite its comedic nature, this weapon is not to be trifled with, as the gas it releases is potent enough to cause its intended target to literally pass out from the stink. For how long the target is unconscious is unknown. Regardless, this weapon is used as a respectful salute tool, such as the 21-fart gun salute, and has come in handy on ocassion.
Plot[]
Despicable Me[]
Dr. Nefario invertedly misheard Gru's instructions for a "Dart Gun" and created the Fart Gun by accident. He is first seen showcasing this to Gru, knocking the minion out, much to Gru's frustration. Nefario puts it away, and responds: "Ohh. Yes. Because I was wondering, under what circumstances would we use this?"
Despicable Me 2[]
Gru's Minions utilize a 21-Fart Gun salute in honor of Dr. Nefario's departure for a new employment offer. Nefario also personally incapacitate the mutated El Macho once Gru electrocuted him with a Zapp Lipstick Taser.
Despicable Me 3[]
It appears in the ending with Mel in the last scene with Dru in Gru's Airship.
Illumination Entertainment[]
At the start of Despicable Me 3, the Fart Gun is used by Bob to incapacitate Mel and take the Illumination script.
Appearances in Other Media[]
Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem[]
The Fart Gun is used as a threat to the Minions in Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem. Somehow, the fart gun's scent is replaced with that of bananas.
Minion Rush[]
In Despicable Me: Minion Rush, sometimes two Minions can be found on the side of the track playing with the Fart Gun. If your Minion runs into them, the screen will be momentarily covered in green gas. A Despicable Bonus will be awarded to the player's Minion who will automatically knock a Minion playing with the Fart Gun.
In the Jelly Lab Update, the Fart Gun's effects have been strengthened. When the player runs through its gas, the entire screen will be warped and distorted, as though covered in liquid, greatly blinding the player's view. This can be dangerous in some areas, as the player won't be able to see oncoming obstacles in his way, usually resulting in colliding into one. Also in this update, Minions will spawn and use the Fart Gun in Vector's Fortress.
In the Minion Race update, the Fart Gun is also used as a gadget. It is a two-star defense weapon that generates green fumes and obstructs vision. Additionally, enemies are slowed down for the entire duration of the fumes.
Merchandise[]
The fart gun is sold under the label "Fart Blaster", as a Toys R Us exclusive, though some have been sold in a toy store at Universal Studios Citywalk and on Amazon.[1]
As of 2020-2021, the fart gun is sold under the label "Fart n' Fire" in certain toy stores. The main differences are that it sprays mist in order to replicate the fart gas as seen in some of the films, and it has occasional sounds of some Minions laughing.
Recently, Moose has advertised a new version of the fart gun under the label "Ultimate Fart Blaster" which is to be sold. The main differences are that it sprays an air ring to replicate how the gas travels as seen in some of the films. It's claimed these rings can shoot up to 6 feet.
Trivia[]
- The Fart Gun has a unique firing sound which appropriately resembles farting.
- It is also one of the only weapons that is powered by a gas.
- Originally, Gru asked Dr. Nefario to develop a "Dart Gun", but Nefario misheard what Gru said and developed the Fart Gun, much to the former's chagrin.
- Nefario also commented in Despicable Me that he wasn't sure of what circumstances would they use it. Indeed, the Fart Gun has very few applications such as for salutes and against El Macho in Despicable Me 2.
- For all intensive purposes, it's only use is to be a quick and non-lethal way to incapacitate enemies at close range when they are already on the verge of defeat. It's firing sound makes it useless in situations that would require stealth, not ironically (silent, but deadly).
- Gru did not ask Nefario to develop a Dart Gun after he sees the Fart Gun, unlike when he asks Nefario to develop the Cookie Robots when Nefario accidentally made Boogie Robots. This was most likely due to the fact it was not urgently needed.
- Despite that, Nefario still made seven copies of the weapon and it did prove useful in the final defeat of El Macho.
- Nefario also commented in Despicable Me that he wasn't sure of what circumstances would they use it. Indeed, the Fart Gun has very few applications such as for salutes and against El Macho in Despicable Me 2.
- Although Minions do not have visible noses, the Fart Gun is still able to knock one out. It should be noted that in Minions: The Rise of Gru, the Minions are somehow unaffected by the Fart Bomb Gru deployed in theater.
- Nefario has kept a Fart Gun all the time during the events of Despicable Me 2, as seen when he brings it out to knock out El Macho.
- The 21-Fart Gun Salute is a reference to the 21-gun salute, performed with muskets at important ceremonies such as funerals and the inauguration of a new President.
- Presumably, for the 21-Fart Gun Salute, there is a dedicated troop of Minions carrying out the salute. The commands that the Minion in charge gives orders is reminiscent of the commands a soldier gives during a march.
