Gru's Rocket is a large rocket that was used by Felonius Gru to steal the moon in Despicable Me.

Plot

Despicable Me

Gru plans to steal the Moon in response to the theft of the Great Pyramid of Giza, and after he gets enough capital, the Minions and Dr. Nefario start to build this rocket.

The rocket is launched from Gru's underground Lab. As the rocket lifts off, Vector uses the Squid Launcher to attach himself to the rocket and tries to attack Gru, but Gru activates an electric shock system, knocking Vector off. On the way, the rocket almost hits a floating minion who previously drank Anti-Gravity Serum, but barely passes it.

When the rocket successfully reaches the Moon, Gru leaves the spacecraft and shrinks the Moon until it's small enough to grab by hand. As Gru celebrates his achievement, the recital ticket for his ex-adoptive daughters, Margo, Edith, and Agnes, floats out of his suit (Previously inserted in his pocket by a minion and a shrunk minion). Feeling guilty, Gru decides to go back to the Earth and watch the recital, so he hurries back in the rocket.

On his way, one of the rocket's external boosters detaches and falls down to a playground and gets stuck in a roundabout, spinning it faster and faster, which makes the children cheer. Gru finds out that the rocket is going to hit the dance hall, so he uses his rocket's parachute brake, and it eventually stops in front of the recital hall.

Trivia

  • The rocket resembles the Mercury space capsule due to its silvery, conical appearance.
  • Real-life rockets as spacecrafts that carries people will not have a glass cockpit, instead they are driven semi-automatically, because glass can't withstand the friction and pressure, and the control cabins won't be how Gru uses it, because in real life, he would have been squashed due to improper designs.
  • It does not have more than one rocket stage.
    • However, it's possible that it's light enough that it doesn't need much fuel and stages.
  • It does not have a return cabin that parachutes down the water, however, it can be landed like a convectional fixed-wing aircraft. It's cabin also resembles a modern convectional fixed-wing aircraft.
    • It does have a chute, but strangely, it's deployed from the tail of the rocket, which occupy the same area as the engines. In reality, this would cause the rocket engine to burn the chute, although it does makes some sense as Gru shuts off the engines when landing.
