Puppy is an short film that was attached to the Blu-ray home video release of Despicable Me 2. It centers around the relationship between a Minion, Dave[1] and a Miniature UFO.

Plot

Dave sees many owners walk their dogs, so he wants a puppy of his own. He tries to leash Kyle, a squirrel, a pigeon, and a ladybug, but fails each time. A miniature UFO then appears and abducts the ladybug. Enamored by the strange being, Dave convinces the UFO to become his puppy with a few cheeseballs. He trains it and the two become really close.

The UFO became very useful to the other minions as they sees Dave eating a large cheese ball it changed into and party lights glimmer in the window. The minions thanked the UFO for enlarging their bananas.

One night, as the minion and the UFO are watching a movie with Gru and his family, the UFO blows up the TV after seeing another UFO in the movie being attacked. After Gru kicks them out, they star-gaze and the UFO's laser beam suggests it misses its home in the universe. So Dave manages to e-mail the UFO's fellow peers and they arrive at Gru's backyard. Although they are both sad about the leaving, Dave's pet leaves one final gift - it enlarges the ladybug it "abducted" earlier.

Trivia

  • When stargazing, the UFO first projects a small part of Ursa Major.
  • The song that plays during the bonding montage is Hanson's hit song "MMMBop".
  • This short film is the first work to feature extra-terrestials in the main Despicable Me universe.
  • The UFO is from Sirius, as shown by the email to the the pet's home.
    • The e-mail quietly confirms that the UFO comes from the Sirius system. This doubles as a reference to the fact it is a "puppy"- the UFO's star is the "Dog Star".[2]
  • This short has a lot of similarities to the 1982 hit movie, E.T The Extra-Terrestrial, which is also made by Universal:
    • Both male people find a space related creature (The Minion with a UFO, and Elliott with E.T.).
    • Both bond really well.
    • Both have the extraterrestrials show their homes and get homesick.
    • Both the Minion and Elliott manage to send a message up in space (the Minion with an email and Elliott with a machine he and E.T. created).
    • Both of the extraterrestrials' kind come to pick them up later in their films.
    • Both leave a memento to the main characters (Elliott with E.T. saying he'll be in his heart, and the Minion with an oversized ladybug).
    • Both of the main characters recruit the extraterrestrials with a certain food the extraterrestrials really like (E.T. with Reese's pieces and the UFO with cheese balls)
      • Coincidentally, the food the extraterrestrials like are spherical.
    • Both other people with the main characters eventually find out about the extraterrestrials (The Minion with Gru, the girls, and the minions; and Elliott with his family).
    • Both leave a trail in the sky in the end of the films (E.T. with a rainbow and this film with a banana).
  • Lucy does not appear in this short. It can be implied that this short takes place during the time when she and Gru were still dating before the end of Despicable Me 2.
  • This is the first Illumination Entertainment short to be produced in a 1.85:1 widescreen aspect ratio instead of 1.78:1.
